Does ‘Cloverfield’ Actually Mean Something?

Cloverfield destroys New York City

(via The Vulture) So far, most of Cloverfield's reviews tend to write it off — or praise it — as a simple movie about a giant monster biting a hole through greater Manhattan (and lots of Manhattanites). But could it be something more? Maybe!

The Voice's Nathan Lee reads deep, positing that Cloverfield is a "death-to-New-York saga" and a comment on the accelerated yuppification of New York following 9/11. The movie, he says, "enacts its deft simulation of that infamous September morning in order to brutalize the society that flourished from its ruin like some tacky, tenacious, condo-dwelling fungus." Times economist Tyler Cowen thinks along similar lines but suggests it's more a slap at the social-networking generation, writing on his personal blog, "[T]his is a movie about how the young'uns have no tools for moral discourse and that all they can do is utter banalities and take endless pictures of each other and record their lives for no apparent purpose. I can't recall any other movie that so completely devastates its intended demographic." (more)

When monsters attack! Best cinema beasts

(via MSNBC) The ‘Cloverfield’ creature joins a long list of illustrious movie monsters. Something very big and very angry stalks the streets of New York City in “Cloverfield,” being released in theaters this week.

But “Cloverfield,” of course, has some pretty big shoes to fill if it wants to be King of the Monsters: Giant monsters have been a cinema staple since at least 1925, when audiences thrilled to dinosaurs battling to the death in “The Lost World.”

If you want to get caught up on the genre, it’s not hard — 400-foot fire-breathing monsters leave a trail that’s easy to follow. Here’s a few of our favorites.

Cloverfield Monster Revealed. First Visuals Of The Mysterious Monster

I've been sitting on this for a few days now wondering whether to post it or not. A few people who have seen Cloverfield have sent me bootleg DVD screeners of the movie.

Just kidding! That's for a couple of people I know at Paramount who read the site. Just giving them grief.

While no real video or pictures of the Cloverfield Monster have emerged there have been some fans who saw the movie and gave quick drawings and descriptions. Through the power of the Internet various artists have communicated with the people who have seen the movie to make an artists rendition of the creature. Think of it like those court room sketches you see on the evening news.

Thanks to Ferry for shooting me a link of some of these images. I'm not sure of the creators of these artworks. I've seen a couple at Unfiction and on about 5 other sites now so if any of them are yours feel free to email me for credit or removal.

I believe if you want to be spoiled you should have that option without ruining it for others. So I'll put the spoiler info off-site and link to it from here. That way you won't be spoiled if you don't want to be.

If you want to see the artists drawings of the Cloverfield Monster, which many people who have seen the movie claim claim are very good renditions, than you'll want to hit the link below.

Bad Cloverfield Review: Viral Marketing Fails?

New Cloverfield Image:
Cloverfield's Odette Yustman in Bed

An early Cloverfield Movie Review exemplifies how a viral marketing campaign can fail. This review by someone who calls themself
"Cinematography is, unfortunately, terrible in this film. Most of it seems to have been shot on hand held video camera or something - the perspective wobbles and shakes around, robbing audiences of the true horrors they experienced in their livingrooms on 9/11."

Cloverfield Will Bomb States NY Post

Reed Tucker of the New York Post takes a look at Cloverfield from a different point of view. He looks at the different signs that point toward Cloverfield's doom.
The movie, produced by fanboy icon J.J. Abrams (creator of “Lost" and “Alias"), has been generating a steady stream of buzz since its no-title trailer debuted last summer. The hype has been driven by an ingenious, relentless viral campaign (see related story), and at this point bloggers and sci-fi fans couldn't be more excited if their girlfriends greeted them at the door in Princess Leia's gold bikini from “Return of the Jedi."

Now, let's just hope “Cloverfield" isn't a horrible disappointment. If even one geek takes his life with his replica phaser, it will be too many.

But how could it possibly disappoint, you ask? Abrams is one of the few guys in Hollywood who can be relied on to consistently produce compelling entertainment.

But the red flags are there. So let's step back from the hype, pour ourselves a frosty glass of Haterade and look at seven reasons to be skeptical about “Cloverfield." As playwright Wilson Mizner said, “I respect faith, but doubt is what gets you an education." (continue article)

Bam! New Cloverfield Clip With Monster Sighting

This short and sweet Cloverfield advert shows us a new (and very quick) glimpse of the Cloverfield Monster. Like the full-length trailer, this clip only shows a brief glimpse of the monster lost within the shadows of the skyscrapers. Don't blink. You might miss it.

Another Cloverfield Review

The first, official main-stream Cloverfield movie review (that I know of) has surfaced. The mystery and speculation is gone from trying to guess the validity of reviewers and random posts.

AICN's Harry Knowles has seen the Cloverfield movie and has been kind enough to post about it. AICN is a legit and very big site so you can take this one to the bank. To sum it up without spoilers, Harry was blown away by the movie and claimed it was "a bold genre-reinvention unlike anything we’ve ever seen before."

He compared it to Saving Private Ryan with Monsters instead of Nazis.

You can catch the full review linked below (spoilers warning) and know that security was tighter than ever for the screening which means you most likely won't be seeing a screen cap of the monster before next Friday.

Cloverfield Monster Details Revealed

cloverfield poster/Film has posted detailed descriptions of the Cloverfield Monster. It looks like not only are you going to be able to see the Cloverfield Monster in the movie, but it will be highly detailed and thought out. J.J. Abrams and crew brought in experts from Phil Tippett's studio to make the Cloverfield Monster highly articulate.

I'll write a little bit about the article but be warned of spoilers below. I'll leave the specific spoiler details to you find at /Film (at the bottom of the post). Some people would not like to know any details, so please beware.

Sorry, no photos of the Cloverfield Monster yet.

Building a Better Monster

The producers left out one key detail of the Cloverfield Monster: Where it's from.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of these "blackboard" scenes so it's nice to hear they didn't waist their time trying to get all technical. For those of you who have read this blog over the length of the Cloverfield chaos (thank you!) you'll know a bunch of people tried to claim they had the storyline to Cloverfield. Many claimed the Cloverfield storyline had these "blackboard' scenes with scientists and all kinds of detailed explanations. It's nice to know we can officially rule them out.
"And where is he from? “We don’t say – deliberately,” notes (Cloverfield writer Drew) Goddard. “Our movie doesn’t have the scientist in the white lab coat who shows up and explains things like that. We don’t have that scene."

(via /Film) The visual effects for “Cloverfield” were produced under the direction of visual effects supervisors Kevin Blank, Eric Leven of Tippett Studio and Michael Ellis of London-based Double Negative. Tippett created all the shots that include the monsters, while Double Negative was responsible for all of the other destruction and sequences which did not include the monster.

The concept for the Cloverfield Monster (affectionately known simply as “Clover” in-house) is simple, says Abrams. “He’s a baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.”

And where is he from? “We don’t say – deliberately,” notes Goddard. “Our movie doesn’t have the scientist in the white lab coat who shows up and explains things like that. We don’t have that scene.”

For the monster’s design, Abrams engaged veteran creature designer Neville Page, who had just finished creating characters for James Cameron’s upcoming “Avatar” (and is currently working on Abrams’ “Star Trek”).

Cloverfield In The News

A semi- humorous look at the world as it has been touched by J.J. Abrams.

Unfortunately, she discusses her interest in the film and brings out the Cloverfield-9/11 connection at the end.

A look at the production of new movies Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, which both borrow heavily from the infamous Blair Witch Project.

This is a limited time advertisement, but Cloverfield is the latest movie to take over the homepage of MySpace.

Cloverfield Monster

The Cloverfield Monster is a hot commodity right now. Tonight there was a wave of Internet searches for the "Cloverfield Monster" that even saw a nice spike on Google Trends. I'm guessing the interest has to do with the TV ads that are saturating the holiday TV lineup.

The only real video I know of at the moment of the Cloverfield Monster is this clip that came from the full-length trailer released a month and a half ago. It shows the Cloverfield Monster walking through the skyscrapers of Manhattan while the Army fires at it. The video has been reused in a couple of the TV ads that I've seen but I have yet to see any new footage. Feel free to shoot me a link to any new images or video but for now I think we're left with this little clip:

Also, here is the Cloverfield trailer I mentioned above that featured the original footage of the monster which is located about the 1:25 mark.

The Irresistible Urge to Destroy New York on Screen

Over the years Manhattan has been a focal point for cinematic destruction. Now, "Cloverfield" follows hot on the tail of Will Smith's "I Am Legend" in taking a bite out of the Big Apple. The New York Times takes a look at the resurgence of movies destroying New York City.

Cloverfield Monster Screen Time

Grrr...Is this the Cloverfield Monster?

Everyone knows there will be a Cloverfield Monster. Nobody knows exactly what it is. The question is will we see it and how much of it will be visible?

My little informal poll (on the top right side of this site) was about the screen time of the Cloverfield Monster. 154 people voted (thanks!) and it was a good spread between the 4 choices. Looking at the breakdown, it looks like most people believed the Cloverfield Monster will be seen in small amounts.

Fan Artwork of Clvoerfield Monster

The only real clip of the Cloverfield Monster right now is this little video taken from the full-length trailer. You can clearly see a creature walking past the buildings. The Cloverfield Monster video also slows it down and backs up to show you what look like the legs as they are walking.

Cloverfield Movie Plot Summerized

cloverfieldThe (new) official site for the Cloverfield Movie has updated their menu to include a plot summary.

While this Cloverfield Movie summary does not really offer new information, it does pin down some clues that had us all wondering. The Cloverfield Monster is officially pegged as being the size of a skyscraper and the video style of the Cloverfield Teaser Trailer looks to be in utilized for the picture.
"Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city.

Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives."

Cloverfield Hi-Resolution Trailer Shot By Shot

cloverfield movie trailerA quick viewing of the new Hi-Resolution Cloverfield trailer had something strike me as odd. I have yet to check with UnFiction to see what all they dug up, but hopefully some of these can be useful.

First off, did they redo the entire scene where Rob enters his Farewell Party?

Sure enough they did.

cloverfield rob partyThe opening shot of both trailers shows Rob entering a surprise party. In the latest trailer his hair is sticking up a little and he's got a new, geeky friend.

What is Cloverfield?

Welcome to 1-18-08 Project Cloverfield Blog.

Cloverfield is the J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) produced monster flick directed by Matt Reeves. Get caught up on all the Cloverfield news including the viral world of Tagruato, TIDOwave, and Slusho!? And now Aladygma?

However, I love viral campaigns. Cloverfield taught me the fun of being involved with the viral world of movies and TV. That's why I'd like to branch out this site to cover some of the major viral campaigns as they are developing. Feel free to drop me a line or tip on any you find interesting.

Welcome to Cloverfield

Very few facts emerged from the viral campaign that was Cloverfield. It all started after a short, teaser trailer for Cloverfield appeared with the Transformers movie in early July of 2007. Since then, speculation surrounded what the title of the movie would be (Monstrous, Overnight, etc...) and what the monster really is and why it is tearing up New York City.

A few pictures and covert videos from the film showed up online and there were only a few core facts we knew of including the poster, the teaser trailer, and a few websites at 1-18-08, Tagruato Corp, and Slusho .

In November, the official full-length Cloverfield trailer was released that helped open up the story as well as cement the "Cloverfield" name for the movie. A short glimpse of the Cloverfield Monster was seen but for most people they still had little or no clue as to what it was.

The movie centered around five young New Yorkers throwing their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives. Cloverfield opened the weekend of 1-18-08 and set box office records for a movie in January with a monster take of over $40M. Continue to check back here for updates on the mystery and viral campaigns of Cloverfield.

Click and hold the mouse to 'grab' an image and move it around. While holding the image, shake it back and forth quickly and it will flip over. Some images have writing on the back.

Slusho This is the Japanese frozen drink made from a secret ingredient gathered from the bottom of the ocean. Slusho gives you a kick and makes you extremely happy. Prior to 1-18-08 Slusho was not sold in the US. However, recent FDA approval gave Slusho clearance to come to the states. Rob Hawkins, the lead character, was recently promoted to vice-president of Slusho and was on his way to Japan the night of the attack. Slusho is owned by the Tagruato Corp. of Japan. Slusho also first made an appearance on J.J. Abrams Alias during a scene where characters buy the drink at a store.

Tagruato This ficticious Japanese company is the parent company of Slusho as well as the Yoshida Medical Research, Bold Futura, and ParafFUN! Wax Distributors. Besides drilling the oceans for Slusho ingredients, Tagruato builds everything from space satellites to medical gear.

T.I.D.O wave An activist group set out to bring to light all the damage Tagruato has done to the envirnoment.
