More Star Trek Details

Starship Enterprise

Some quick notes about the upcoming Star Trek movie being directed by Bad Robot mastermind J.J. Abrams. One big note is the budget which is being reported well below the horribly before-mentioned $200 Million. The below text is from Screenrant via /Film but if you notice the part about where Steven Spielberg helped J.J. Abrams decide to take the project I have added another link for more info.
Screenrant has a report from a Star Trek panel this past weeknd at Creation Entertainment’s 16th Annual Grand Slam: The Sci-Fi Summitin Burbank, CA. Here are some highlights:

* The movie will be rated PG-13 and have a budget “far below” $200 million. A $160 million price-tag has been floating around the web for months now.

* The most interesting tidbit revealed a story (I had yet to hear) about of how JJ Abrams came onto the project. Apparently Steven Spielberg read the script and helped convince J.J. Abrams to sign on to the project. TrekMovie reports that Spielberg also visited the set during shooting scenes on the Enterprise and helped JJ Abrams work out a scene to help ‘with the action’

* Leonard Nimoy also admitted that “it would have been damaging to the story to put Shatner in the film.” As much as I want to see William Shatner in the film, an attemp to erase Captain Kirk’s death from Star Trek: Generations would waste valuable screen time, and just serve to sidetrack the story.

* The USS Enterprise will be assembled in space, although parts of it will be assembled on Earth.

* Screenwriter Roberto Orci claims that the film was pushed back because “Paramount really wants it to be a summer blockbuster.”

* There is at least one Star Trek reference in Transformers 2

Cloverfield Hits Japan

japan cloverfieldHakaisha

The land of Godzilla has officially welcomed the Cloverfield (see our sister site for more) world into their own. For some reason Paramount decided to wait a few months to release Cloverfield in Japan even though it has been seen in surrounding countries like Malaysia and Australia almost 2 months back.

The lag time didn't seem to phase the popularity of the American version of Godzilla as Cloverfield took in a nice sum and looks to draw around $20 Million by the time it leaves.

"Monster pic "Cloverfield" hit No. 1 at the Japanese weekend B.O., following its April 5 bow on 235 screens. The pic earned 26.4 million yen ($2.6 million) Saturday and Sunday. This was 30.2% more than "Dreamgirls," which opened on 287 screens and finished with $19.3 million and only 1.2% less than "Babel," which bowed on 351 screens and ended with $20 million."

Pixel Farm and Cloverfield

Cloverfield Clues has found a nice blurp about The Pixel Farm who helped provide some technical work for the Cloverfield movie.
According this promo piece on The Pixel Farm's website, Double Negative used TPF's visual FX tools on Cloverfield. The article is a little on the technical side, but there are some nice behind-the-scenes pictures of the FX work.

First 5 Miniutes of Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?

A nice viral video for Morgan Spurlock's new doc "Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?" gives us a sneak peak at the first five minutes of the movie.

The Gotham Times/ Joker Update

Thanks to Charlie for the tip on the Gotham Times updating. Harvey Dent ran his DA campaign a few weeks back and the Gotham Times reported on it as well as the Joker hijacking the site and giving his version. Turns out Harvey Dent is in need for a new toupee.

The Gotham Times is a 4 page issue but if you click on the "ha" in the "GoTHam" title on top you'll go to the Joker's version called the Ha Ha Times. Each of the 4 pages gets a different perspective edited by the Joker himself.

1-18-08.com Update - Missing: Teddy Hanssen

1-18-08.com has received their first update since the opening week of Cloverfield. The depicted picture is of Missing Teddy Hanssen who was last seen on 12-07-07. This coincides with the Jamie and Teddy viral videos that had Teddy and Jamie swapping short, personal videos.

Teddy mentioned at one point that there was trouble aboard his station and captured by Tagruato agents. Teddy even sent Jamie some of the Slusho ingredient. Thanks Jess for the tip!

While I ponder whether or not to give away a Cloverfield DVD to a lucky visitor it looks like the group at M&C is giving away 5 copies of the movie. The best I can tell the site is based out of Puerto Rico and the contest is open to U.S. residents only. Just shoot them an e-mail with some info to get registered.

More Tom Cruise-Star Trek Rumors

J.J. Abrams gives tips to Tom Cruise for MI: 3

Rumors of Tom Cruise visiting the set of J.J. Abrams Star Trek have popped up a few times over the last 6 months. Last week the news was fired up again by MSNBC who claimed Tom Cruise stopped by the set of the movie to talk with pal J.J. The two worked together on Abrams first full-length big screen direction gig MI: 3.
"Tom visited the set of the movie and chatted with J.J. Abrams,” a source close to the actor said. The last time Cruise was spotted on a set for a movie he wasn’t said to be signed on for — “Tropic Thunder” — it turned out he had a small role. Unfortunately for Cruise fans, the visit to the “Star Trek” set was just a social call — Cruise and Abrams are friends, and apparently, Cruise is a fan of the television series and in particular, Mr. Spock." Aladygma? Again?

What is Nightshot?

The rumors of Aladygma have surfaced again via Kevin Powers at First Showing. It's been mentioned that Aladygma is the codename for a possible Cloverfield sequel. Powers breaks down the clues from the odd site for Aladygma and tries to make a connection with Cloverfield including this German video.

Also, Powers looks at The Night Shot, a funky website filled with cryptic clues. Use the 'Ctrl + A' (highlight) feature to see parts of the site. At this point there's still not enough info to find a connection to Cloverfield. Something is brewing out there, though. We just need a few more pieces of the puzzle to get started.

What is Cloverfield?

Welcome to 1-18-08 Project Cloverfield Blog.

Cloverfield is the J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) produced monster flick directed by Matt Reeves. Get caught up on all the Cloverfield news including the viral world of Tagruato, TIDOwave, and Slusho!? And now Aladygma?

However, I love viral campaigns. Cloverfield taught me the fun of being involved with the viral world of movies and TV. That's why I'd like to branch out this site to cover some of the major viral campaigns as they are developing. Feel free to drop me a line or tip on any you find interesting.

Welcome to Cloverfield

Very few facts emerged from the viral campaign that was Cloverfield. It all started after a short, teaser trailer for Cloverfield appeared with the Transformers movie in early July of 2007. Since then, speculation surrounded what the title of the movie would be (Monstrous, Overnight, etc...) and what the monster really is and why it is tearing up New York City.

A few pictures and covert videos from the film showed up online and there were only a few core facts we knew of including the poster, the teaser trailer, and a few websites at 1-18-08, Tagruato Corp, and Slusho .

In November, the official full-length Cloverfield trailer was released that helped open up the story as well as cement the "Cloverfield" name for the movie. A short glimpse of the Cloverfield Monster was seen but for most people they still had little or no clue as to what it was.

The movie centered around five young New Yorkers throwing their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives. Cloverfield opened the weekend of 1-18-08 and set box office records for a movie in January with a monster take of over $40M. Continue to check back here for updates on the mystery and viral campaigns of Cloverfield.

If you're new to the Cloverfield viral world than let's get started. First off, for the beginners let's look at what we're talking about.

What does viral marketing mean? Click here.

1-18-08.com Updates with pictures randomly. Each picture is layered onto of the previous update and all can be dragged and moved around the screen. Click and hold the mouse to 'grab' an image and move it around. While holding the image, shake it back and forth quickly and it will flip over. Some images have writing on the back.

Slusho This is the Japanese frozen drink made from a secret ingredient gathered from the bottom of the ocean. Slusho gives you a kick and makes you extremely happy. Prior to 1-18-08 Slusho was not sold in the US. However, recent FDA approval gave Slusho clearance to come to the states. Rob Hawkins, the lead character, was recently promoted to vice-president of Slusho and was on his way to Japan the night of the attack. Slusho is owned by the Tagruato Corp. of Japan. Slusho also first made an appearance on J.J. Abrams Alias during a scene where characters buy the drink at a store.

Tagruato This ficticious Japanese company is the parent company of Slusho as well as the Yoshida Medical Research, Bold Futura, and ParafFUN! Wax Distributors. Besides drilling the oceans for Slusho ingredients, Tagruato builds everything from space satellites to medical gear.

T.I.D.O wave An activist group set out to bring to light all the damage Tagruato has done to the envirnoment.

Jamie and Teddy A minor character from the movie, Jamie popped up on a 1-18-08.com picture and the MySpace profiles for the movies characters before getting famous for her "Jamie and Teddy" website. The site is comprised of video journals from Jamie. The site is password protected but can be accessed by the password "jllovesth"
