J.J. Abrams Talks Cloverfield with Rolling Stone

The inhouse Batman viral guru, Charlie, was cruising around town in his homemade Batmobile and while at a red light he was flipping through his issue of Rolling Stone and noticed this little blurp about J.J. Abrams.

Charlie and I agree that this may be the first time that anyone from the Cloverfield camp has officially claimed the Cloverfield Monster fate at the end of the movie. Click the above pic to read more.

Cloverfield Ending - Did Something Fall From the Sky?

On the DVD watch the object circled in red above

The best part of grabbing Cloverfield on DVD (besides the Roar! Cloverfield Overture at the end credits) is finally getting my hands on a decent copy of the alleged object falling from the sky right smack at the end. In the Coney Island scene while the camera is pointed out of the Ferris Wheel there was something that fell into the ocean. With the nice DVD quality you can see that indeed there is something that falls from the sky. Read more about the Cloverfield ending here.

Yahoo! Just The Facts on Cloverfield; Video of Cloverfield Monster

Yahoo! movies has started a new thing (or at least new to me) called "Just the facts" that give a breakdown on new and upcoming movies. On the list are movies like Jumper and Iron Man along with Cloverfield. Here's a sample of the info they provide for the user:
FACT ONE: It Came From Japan Producer J.J. Abrams took his son to a toy store in Japan and saw rows and rows of Godzilla toys. Feeling that the U.S. lacked a giant monster of its own, he decided to a make his own creature feature that would be filmed entirely through the point-of-view of the people on the ground, running for their lives.

FACT TWO: "Felicity" Fans Are in for a Shock Abrams picked his childhood friend Matt Reeves to direct the film. Together, they created Felicity, a show about young New Yorkers looking for love. But while the most exciting moment on that show was the time Keri Russell cut her hair, in this movie the entire city gets hacked to pieces.

FACT THREE: This Poster Doesn't Lie As a kid, Abrams loved Escape From New York. But he felt cheated that the image of the Statue of Liberty's head lying in the street on the movie's poster wasn't actually in the film. Abrams finally got to see it on the big screen in the teaser trailer that appeared before Transformers last summer.

Along with the breakdown of the movie is a clip from Cloverfield showing one of the attacks of the Cloverfield Monster. This scene shows the gang running head on into the Cloverfield Monster for the first time as they had uptown to rescue Beth. They seek cover as the military advances on the Cloverfield Monster and the gang ends up running down to the subway.

Cloverfield Monster Designer Neville Page

cloverfield monster toyCloverfield Monster picture

Neville Page has finally allowed io9.com to talk to them about his design for the recent movie monster, "Clover" (as he calls it) from Cloverfield. Right now, Page is working on James Cameron's Avatar, the movie adaptation of Watchmen, and J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek. But with the new Cloverfield Monster toy out, all we wanted to do was talk monster. And we got some good answers. Did you know Clover has more than one way to eat? Find out everything you want to know about the Cloverfield monster in our interview with Page.
What inspired your design? What sources did you draw from?

Well, once we had a direction the inspirations were definitely aquatic. Especially with the head. There is a very complex skeletal structure in there for eating, but you don't see it at all in the movie or toy. Clover also has a complex breathing system and more than one way to eat. But, again, it is hardly obvious in the film nor toy. Honestly, the biggest inspiration is less about one or two other animals, but rather inspired by biological plausibility in general (ignoring the fact that something that big could never live on land). Sometime the cart has to lead the horse and you make it cool first then justify it later, but I always try to give the creatures I design a "good reason" to be. As for the parasite, I knew that I wanted something thin and vertical and light. Kinda like a flea.

The monster looks ungainly and J.J. Abrams has said in the press notes that it's a "baby". Was that also part of the design? For it to look a bit clumsy?

I would have preferred that it be even clumsier. But then it can get comical. Yes, it was the intention that it is a baby and it is not only developing its strength, but also its land legs. The proportions are intended to feel a little like a new born deer or horse. Long, thin and slightly awkward.

Do you think there will be a sequel for sure? We know they've said that they are working on one.

I am only speculating here, but I do think so. There are so many other movies that have sequels that make you wonder why. So, if a motivation to make a movie is based on the box office success, then it seems very probable. I have asked, and I still don't know yet. Regardless, I am designing Clover 2 in my head. The Man Behind The Cloverfield Monster. Phil Tippett Talks Shop

Phil Tippett is a living legend in the movie biz. Not only has he had a chance to work on some of the greatest movies in history but he is also one of the leading special effects wizards who has helped define the industry.

The San Francisco Chronicle takes a look at the works of Phil Tippett and his Tippett Studios which includes work on the recent J.J. Abrams monster flick Cloverfield and The Spiderwick Chronicles as well as greats Jurassic Park and the original Star Wars trilogy.
"It's not hard to find Phil Tippett, who is waiting upstairs in the main building of his special-effects studio in Berkeley. Just follow the trail of Tyrannosaurus rex models, which are scattered liberally among the memorabilia from scores of science fiction films he's contributed to since his groundbreaking work on "Star Wars."

"Little boys diverge into two groups: One goes into trucks and the other goes into dinosaurs," he says. "I went into dinosaurs."

Among the special-effects pioneers of his era, many of whom have settled in the Bay Area, Tippett is a bit of a dinosaur himself. The Berkeley native carried the stop-motion animation torch longer than anyone else, and was so despondent when computer graphics took over the industry in the early 1990s, that he became physically ill.

But a decade and a half later, his studio continues to thrive - known for its superior creature effects. Tippett Studio was responsible for the monster in "Cloverfield," and the studio teamed with Industrial Light & Magic to create various beasts for "The Spiderwick Chronicles." Tippett's resume already contained a toy chest's worth of science fiction geek icons, starting with the animated chessboard monsters in "Star Wars" and the stop-motion AT-AT snow walkers in "The Empire Strikes Back."

"Phil's like this big blustery guy - he's grumpy but he's also funny," says Spiderwick animation supervisor Todd Labonte, who has worked at Tippett Studio for almost a decade. "And then you start talking about work, and he has this great understanding of animation and animal behavior." (...continue)

Cloverfield Monster Toy Pictures Released!

cloverfield monster toyCloverfield Monster Toy

About a month ago Hasbro announced that a new toy based on the Cloverfield Monster would be on sale for roughly $100 and it would be released in September (see Own the Cloverfield Monster for $100). However, no pictures were released of the Cloverfield monster or the toy at that time. The press release only described the Cloverfield monster as:
* 70 points of articulation and incredible life-like detail
* Authentic sound
* 14” tall
* 10 parasites
* Two interchangeable heads
* Statue of Liberty head accessory
* Special Cloverfield collector’s edition packaging
The Hasbro site has finally loaded up some images of the Cloverfield Monster (order here) finally which marks the first official Cloverfield Monster tie-in. A huge hat tip to Eddy at the Tagruato Blog for keeping an eye out for this and letting me know when they came up.

These pictures of the Cloverfield Monster showcases how ugly the beast really is. Oddly, the lung sacks that were on the side of the head (seen in the movie quite well) are not visible or are on this model painted gray.

The Cloverfield Monster toy also requires 3 AAA batteries to help fuel the Cloverfield Monster Roar (sample Cloverfield Monster roar here) that is allegedly available on the toy.

'Cloverfield' drops 68% at box office

1-18-08 cloverfield viralCloverfield took a huge hit last weekend at the boxoffice. Sadly, one of the worst movies ever made (Meet the Spartans) won Friday and Saturdays ticket sales. Rambo came in second and 27 Dresses in third. Cloverfield was right behind at 4th place. The numbers sound worse than they are. The difference between Rambo and Cloverfield was only $1.2 Million on Saturday. 27 Dresses and Cloverfield were virtually tied through the weekend.

Some doomsayers are saying this is a huge blow because Cloverfield should have won this weekend. However, as word of mouth about Cloverfield's camera work and mysterious storyline surfaced around the country some people stayed away. A few people I talked to were worried about the camera being shaky (they get motion sickness) and after I told them what it was like they decided to wait.

As it stands, the box office gross of Cloverfield is over $64 Million (U.S.) with another $15 Million overseas. Most of Europe actually opens this coming weekend so that number will go up. Technically, the movie made a profit already and no one at Paramount is complaining.

(via Variety) "Paramount's "Cloverfield" may have posted the biggest January opening of all time, but it's turning out to be more of a marketing win than a runaway crowd pleaser at the box office.

Pic plunged 68% in its second weekend at the domestic box office, putting "Cloverfield" in that category of films that rely on a huge opening weekend, akin to a much-hyped pay-per-view event.

But Par spent just $25 million to produce the movie, which has grossed $64.3 million in its first 10 days domestically, according to Rentrak. The film, still very early in its run abroad, has grossed $15 million internationally from only a few territories. Par, which likely spent as much marketing the movie as on the production budget, says the movie will easily be a financial success.
Most in Hollywood weren't surprised by "Cloverfield's" precipitous falloff. The pic, produced by J.J. Abrams and shot to resemble a homevideo, got a "C" cinema score, meaning moviegoers were lukewarm at best about what they saw."

Does ‘Cloverfield’ Actually Mean Something?

Cloverfield destroys New York City

(via The Vulture) So far, most of Cloverfield's reviews tend to write it off — or praise it — as a simple movie about a giant monster biting a hole through greater Manhattan (and lots of Manhattanites). But could it be something more? Maybe!

The Voice's Nathan Lee reads deep, positing that Cloverfield is a "death-to-New-York saga" and a comment on the accelerated yuppification of New York following 9/11. The movie, he says, "enacts its deft simulation of that infamous September morning in order to brutalize the society that flourished from its ruin like some tacky, tenacious, condo-dwelling fungus." Times economist Tyler Cowen thinks along similar lines but suggests it's more a slap at the social-networking generation, writing on his personal blog, "[T]his is a movie about how the young'uns have no tools for moral discourse and that all they can do is utter banalities and take endless pictures of each other and record their lives for no apparent purpose. I can't recall any other movie that so completely devastates its intended demographic." (more)

Cloverfield Monster Versus Vacuum Bomb

cloverfield movie photos

Note: If you haven't seen J.J. Abrams' kick-ass monster flick Cloverfield yet, you might want to avoid this spoilery post.

There's some debate as to which type of weapon was used in the ending of Cloverfield. Most now specualate that a non-nuclear weapon was used since the camera survived. While we may have to wait until Cloverfield 2 to find out, Wired.com takes a look at some potential bombs.

"Shells fired by M-1 tanks from the New York National Guard's 42nd Division just bounce off its hide. Same with MLRS and AT-4 rockets, missiles from F/A-18s and Mk 82 bombs dropped by a B-2 bomber. Infantry are like camouflaged candy to the five-legged, 500-foot-tall creature that flattens Manhattan and gobbles hipsters in the new movie Cloverfield. After the everyday weapons fail, in a last-ditch defense the U.S. military apparently deploys one of the most powerful non-nuclear bombs in its inventory: the Massive Ordnance Air-Burst, aka "Mother of All Bombs."

MOAB releases a cloud of combustible gas before igniting, creating a vacuum effect that pulverizes anything nearby and, at a distance, can turn bodies inside out, according to legend." (source)

Asian Man In Alley Translation

cloverfield monster(Spoilers Warning) When Rob, Lily, and Hud are running toward Midtown to get to Beth they encounter various (and wiser!) people running the other way. The Cloverfield Monster is in Midtown and the military is evacuating people. In an alley they run into a foreign dude who looks Asian and he stops to talk to the main 3 characters but only spits out his native language.

I've been hoping that someone could translate that for us in case he's rambling on some coded message or otherwise vital clue. One of the guys at Unfiction has found the translation.
"He was Slavic.

He said "No! No! You are going the wrong way! You can not go the wrong way! There are little big spiders (hard to translate, exactly, but he let him know that there were smaller monsters who were also big, and spider-like)! There is a monster!"

Nothing revealing. Probably just something for everyone to obsess over, or maybe a throwback to the babbling and screaming citizens of Tokyo?" (source)

More debate and mystery surrounds the Cloverfield ending. When you sit through the 12 minute ending credits, which I recommend to witness the killer "(Roar!) Cloverfield Overture", you will find a garbled audio track at the very last part of the credits. It sounds like Rob is still recording on the camera. Here's a clip of the audio track.

It sounds like someone says "Help us..." and a bunch of garbled audio. However, the guys at Unfiction have played the last part of the audio clip backwards to reveal this (click the blue triangle to play)

At the very end you'll hear: "It's still alive!"

Freaky! The Cloverfield Monster is still alive. So that brings us to the next question. Will there be a Cloverfield sequel? Can we see Cloverfield 2 in the near future?

What is Cloverfield?

Welcome to 1-18-08 Project Cloverfield Blog.

Cloverfield is the J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) produced monster flick directed by Matt Reeves. Get caught up on all the Cloverfield news including the viral world of Tagruato, TIDOwave, and Slusho!? And now Aladygma?

However, I love viral campaigns. Cloverfield taught me the fun of being involved with the viral world of movies and TV. That's why I'd like to branch out this site to cover some of the major viral campaigns as they are developing. Feel free to drop me a line or tip on any you find interesting.

Welcome to Cloverfield

Very few facts emerged from the viral campaign that was Cloverfield. It all started after a short, teaser trailer for Cloverfield appeared with the Transformers movie in early July of 2007. Since then, speculation surrounded what the title of the movie would be (Monstrous, Overnight, etc...) and what the monster really is and why it is tearing up New York City.

A few pictures and covert videos from the film showed up online and there were only a few core facts we knew of including the poster, the teaser trailer, and a few websites at 1-18-08, Tagruato Corp, and Slusho .

In November, the official full-length Cloverfield trailer was released that helped open up the story as well as cement the "Cloverfield" name for the movie. A short glimpse of the Cloverfield Monster was seen but for most people they still had little or no clue as to what it was.

The movie centered around five young New Yorkers throwing their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives. Cloverfield opened the weekend of 1-18-08 and set box office records for a movie in January with a monster take of over $40M. Continue to check back here for updates on the mystery and viral campaigns of Cloverfield.
